Valerian Root is often used in modern holistic medicine and throughout the ages this herb has been a front runner for its many calming effects on the human body. Valerian is an herb which may help with nervous conditions. In a small 2002 trial, individuals were studied while performing stressful mental work. The research indicated that heart rate and blood pressure were milder when valerian was taken before beginning the tasks. Valerian may have a relaxing, calming effect which is why it is thought to be good for high blood pressure. Sometimes the herb is used in connection with disorders such as ADHD, epilepsy and hysteria. The herb has been used in Germany for unruly children.
Licorice is an ancient herb that was used by Egyptian soldiers to help stave thirst when marching or training in the sandy desert. Licorice is often found in cold medicines because it helps soothe the respiratory tract and acts as an expectorant. It also helps soothe the intestinal walls, peptic ulcers, and chronic gastritis. As an herbal remedy, licorice root is good at relieving constipation discomfort when coupled with herbs that help create a peristalsis response in the intestines.
Garlic has long been considered an invaluable herb for centuries and is used by most cultures throughout the world. Garlic is considered to be a powerful antioxidant (responsible for killing free radicals in the body). Free radicals can harm DNA and increase the age process by destroying cells in the body. Taking garlic everyday may help prevent a person from getting a common cold, ward off infections, aid in digestion, cleanse the blood stream of toxins and prevent blood clots, in addition to countless other health benefits.
In the Journal of Hypertension a clinical trial was published in which some patients were able to reduce their blood pressure from between 1% to 5% after taking garlic supplements. By reducing blood pressure by just this small percentage, it can reduce the chance of a stroke by 30-40% and heart disease by 20-25%.
Hawthorn Berry is considered by many to help maintain cardiovascular health and has been used in Europe as an effective and safe treatment for early stages of heart disease. It is also believed to help with high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, circulatory system, cardiac arrhythmia and angina (chest pains). It contains antioxidant compounds which help to fight free radical damage in the body and studies in rats suggest it may be beneficial in lowering LDL cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. All around, hawthorn berry seems to be a healthy-heart herb.
Capsicum (also called Cayenne), in addition to hawthorn berry, is a great heart-healthy herb, too. It is great for circulation and helps to increase the effectiveness of other herbs when taken together. Capsicum is high in Vitamin A and C, contains calcium and potassium and the complete B-Complex.
Cayenne has been known to immediately stop the effects of a heart attack, such as this testimonial:
“…when a 90-year-old man in Oregon had a severe heart attack, his daughter was able to get Cayenne extract into his mouth. He was pronounced dead by the medics, but within a few minutes, he regained consciousness. On the way to the hospital, he remained in a semi-conscious state, but the daughter kept giving him the Cayenne extract. By the time they got to the hospital, he had recovered his consciousness and wanted to go home to mow the lawn. The doctor asked what she had given him, as he said it was the closest thing to a miracle he had ever seen.”
Dandelion has been used for centuries to treat liver, gall bladder, kidney ailments, weak digestion, rheumatism and as a diuretic. The mineral Potassium is crucial to heart function and in Europe, the dandelion plant is used to combat potassium loss.
Fenugreek is another heart-healthy herb. It can be taken daily to help combat high blood pressure and has helped many people over the centuries with hypertension. It has been used in China and India to treat acid reflux, improve digestion, increase libido and male potency, arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, help maintain a healthy metabolism, skin problems, and help with a sore throat. Studies show that Fenugreek may help lower blood glucose and cholesterol levels as well.
